Modern cities grapple with challenges such as congestion, pollution, and limited resources, yet they continue to expand. Addressing these issues is central to the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goal 11, which aims to make urban areas inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable by managing population growth and resource consumption. To engage young minds in this mission, TCS and its partner, global analytics leader FICO, are hosting the goIT Monthly Challenge for September, titled "Thriving Cities." This competition invites students aged 6-17 to submit innovative ideas for creating cities where people can thrive and prosper, with opportunities for recognition and prizes.

The World Bank reports that about 56% of the global population—equivalent to 4.4 billion people—resides in urban areas, a trend expected to continue until 2050. By then, the urban population is projected to double, with nearly 70% of people living in cities. This rapid expansion will heighten the need for affordable housing, essential services, employment, transportation, and infrastructure, making life more challenging for residents.

John DiChiara, Global Lead of the TCS goIT program, emphasized the impact of urban dysfunction on impoverished communities, stating, “We are deeply concerned about the negative effects on people living in poverty. Engaging young people in finding solutions through goIT is invaluable. We are grateful for FICO’s collaboration on this crucial initiative.”

Irshad Raihan, Vice President of Product Marketing and Corporate Communications at FICO, added, “At FICO, we are committed to leveraging data and analytics to address pressing global challenges. We are excited to support the next generation of innovators through the TCS goIT Monthly Challenge and eager to see their creative contributions towards building more equitable communities.”

Students are invited to propose digital innovations that enhance urban livability, sustainability, and functionality. Potential ideas could include strategies for improving financial literacy, employment, inclusivity, safety, or resilience to natural disasters. All submissions should align with the UN's SDG 11 and will be evaluated by industry experts. Participants, whether individuals or teams, will compete for prizes, mentoring, and future recognition. The deadline for submissions is September 30, 2024.

Click here to enter the goIT Monthly Challenge.
