We are pleased to introduce a significant advancement in embedded security testing: Crypto 3, the newest framework driving Inspector Software’s next-generation security analysis. Available starting with Inspector Software 2025.8, this release redefines how side channel analysis and fault injection testing are designed, executed, and automated—making advanced security testing more accessible to teams of all skill levels.

A Shift from Monolithic to Modular Security Testing
With more than 20 years of experience in embedded security validation, Inspector Software has delivered over 100 dedicated modules supporting side channel analysis (SCA) and fault injection (FI) techniques. While the existing Crypto 2 framework offers a comprehensive, all-in-one approach, adapting it to specific attack scenarios often requires deep expertise and considerable development effort.

Crypto 3 changes this model entirely. Its modular architecture enables faster configuration, intelligent automation, and fine-grained control—streamlining security workflows without sacrificing analytical depth.

Key Advantages of Crypto 3

Reduced Development Effort: Achieve equivalent analysis results with significantly less code by implementing only the attack components you actually need.

Faster Security Validation: Simplified workflows accelerate testing cycles, helping teams identify vulnerabilities earlier and shorten time-to-market.

Greater Adaptability: A block-based design allows selective use of functionality, seamless integration of custom cipher implementations, and easier collaboration across teams with varying expertise.

Prepared for the Future: Built-in extensibility and support for Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC) allow rapid response to evolving cryptographic standards and attack techniques.

Seamless Continuity: Crypto 2 remains fully supported, ensuring existing workflows continue uninterrupted while users transition to Crypto 3 at their own pace.

How Crypto 3 Works in Practice
Developed by our device security engineering experts, Crypto 3 introduces a simplified and modular approach to cryptographic analysis. Instead of requiring full knowledge of a complete cipher or Inspector’s internal structure, functionality is divided into independent, purpose-driven building blocks.

This design allows users to generate only the intermediate values or components required for a specific attack. For example, if an analysis depends on a single internal cipher value, Crypto 3 enables direct access without navigating complex dependencies—saving time and reducing unnecessary complexity.

At the same time, Crypto 3 maintains full backward compatibility. Users can continue using existing cipher implementations within Inspector or integrate their own, while benefiting from the efficiency and flexibility of the new framework.

Designed for Post-Quantum Agility
As Post-Quantum Cryptography continues to evolve, security testing faces new challenges. Cipher designs change rapidly, and investing heavily in one-off implementations can limit experimentation and innovation.

Crypto 3 addresses this challenge by enabling rapid prototyping and iterative testing. Its modular structure allows users to define only the components relevant to their current objective, making it easier to explore new attacks and cipher concepts without extensive integration overhead.

Additionally, many PQC algorithms involve extremely large key spaces, making exhaustive analysis impractical. Crypto 3 supports smarter analysis by allowing users to concentrate on the most relevant key candidates—improving efficiency while maintaining analytical rigor.
With Crypto 3, you can:

Rapidly evaluate new PQC algorithms and attack methods

Implement only the functionality required for your specific scenario

Focus analysis on high-value key candidates rather than exhaustive searches

Inspector Software: A Complete Embedded Security Platform
Inspector Software remains a comprehensive solution for embedded security validation, supporting data acquisition, analysis, and fault injection across chips, embedded devices, and smartcards.

Side Channel Analysis (SC4): Detect vulnerabilities by analyzing power, electromagnetic emissions, and other physical leakages using advanced signal processing and cryptanalysis techniques.

Fault Injection (FJ2): Emulate real-world fault attacks—such as voltage glitches, clock manipulation, and laser-based faults—to evaluate device resilience and uncover hidden weaknesses.

Inspector supports security testing across the entire product lifecycle, from early design validation and FPGA prototyping to production testing and deployed system protection. With Crypto 3, we’ve also strengthened integration with our Python API, enabling greater automation, easier attack prototyping, and more efficient scripting for advanced workflows.

The Next Step in Security Testing Evolution
Both Crypto 2 and Crypto 3 remain available, ensuring a smooth transition with no disruption to existing projects. Crypto 3 represents the foundation of an evolving framework, with additional modules and capabilities planned for future releases.

Our continued focus on backward compatibility allows teams to start leveraging Crypto 3 today while benefiting from ongoing enhancements across the Inspector testing ecosystem.

Start testing smarter. Discover more about Inspector Software’s Side Channel Analysis and Fault Injection capabilities, or contact our team to experience Crypto 3 firsthand.
