PhotonPay, a next-generation financial operating system powered by stablecoin technology, has released its newest industry report, The Next Payment Infrastructure in Africa: From Fragmented Payment Rails to Unified Cross-Border Settlement.

The report examines the rapid growth of Africa's digital economy, where widespread mobile-first adoption has driven innovation despite persistent cross-border payment fragmentation. It highlights how modern payment infrastructure can address liquidity constraints, improve settlement efficiency, and support businesses expanding across African markets.

Readers can explore the report's key insights and download the complete whitepaper to gain a deeper understanding of the evolving payments landscape in Africa.

Africa's Digital Growth Amid Payment Fragmentation
PhotonPay's research explores the economic trends, infrastructure challenges, and emerging technologies shaping Africa's payment ecosystem.

Africa has become one of the world's fastest-growing digital finance markets by bypassing traditional banking systems in favor of mobile-based financial services. Supported by a youthful population with a median age of around 20 and accelerating urbanization, demand for e-commerce, digital payments, and online financial services continues to rise.

Despite this progress, payment systems remain highly fragmented across the continent. Digital payment adoption varies significantly between countries, ranging from more than 70% in Senegal to less than 10% in Niger. While domestic mobile payments are fast and efficient, businesses often face expensive and time-consuming processes when conducting cross-border transactions.

Four Major Challenges Restricting Cross-Border Payments
Although Africa's Instant Payment Systems (IPS) expanded to 33 active networks processing 65.6 billion transactions during 2024, cross-border commercial payments continue to face several structural obstacles.

Limited Financial Formalization: Approximately 85.8% of employment remains within the informal economy, making it difficult for many businesses and merchants to access formal banking and standardized payment services.

Disconnected Payment Networks: Differences in regulatory requirements and payment infrastructure across countries limit interoperability and reduce cross-border transaction efficiency.

Foreign Exchange and Liquidity Constraints: The lack of currency integration forces many regional transactions to rely on foreign currencies and correspondent banking networks, adding an estimated $5 billion in avoidable annual costs.

Slow Settlement Processes: Multi-layer correspondent banking routes increase processing times, transaction fees, and settlement delays that can extend across several business days.

Stablecoins Are Reshaping Cross-Border Commerce
The report highlights how businesses are increasingly adopting blockchain-based payment solutions to overcome the limitations of traditional banking. Between July 2024 and June 2025, Sub-Saharan Africa recorded approximately $205 billion in on-chain transaction value, representing a 52% year-over-year increase.

US dollar-backed stablecoins such as USDC and USDT are becoming an important component of trade between Africa, the Middle East, and Asia, supporting everything from merchant payments to large-scale energy transactions. By transferring value over blockchain networks before converting funds into local currencies, stablecoins reduce dependence on correspondent banks, improve access to dollar liquidity, lower transaction costs from $5-$15 or more to under $1, and shorten settlement times from several days to just minutes.

Building an Interoperable Multi-Rail Payment Ecosystem
The whitepaper emphasizes that stablecoins are designed to complement—not replace—existing financial systems. The future of African payments depends on integrating multiple payment channels into a unified ecosystem, including:

Mobile Money and Digital Wallets: Expanding financial inclusion and enabling everyday consumer payments.

Instant Payment Systems and Card Networks: Supporting domestic commerce and international card transactions.

Stablecoins and Digital Assets: Delivering faster, more cost-effective cross-border settlement and liquidity.

PhotonPay's Integrated Financial Platform
Managing payments across multiple rails introduces new challenges around liquidity, foreign exchange, routing, and settlement. PhotonPay addresses these complexities through an integrated financial platform that combines traditional and digital payment infrastructure.

Its solution includes:

Global Multi-Currency Accounts: Businesses can collect, hold, and manage funds across major fiat currencies and digital assets.

Unified Payment and Settlement Network: Access to more than 60 local payment methods, cards, and mobile wallets with real-time, around-the-clock settlement capabilities.

Foreign Exchange and Stablecoin Conversion: Competitive currency conversion between digital assets and local payment networks while reducing intermediary banking costs.

Enterprise Financial Operations: Automated tools for receivables, supplier payments, expense management, fraud prevention, and transaction monitoring.

The Future of African Cross-Border Payments
The report concludes that Africa's payment ecosystem is entering a new phase focused on global interoperability rather than domestic digital adoption alone. As trade between emerging markets continues to expand, businesses will increasingly benefit from integrated financial infrastructure that connects local payment networks, stablecoin settlement, and global liquidity. By bringing together multiple payment rails into a single intelligent platform, modern financial systems have the potential to reduce cross-border friction and support the continent's continued economic growth.

GLN International, the global cross-border payments platform subsidiary of Hana Bank led by CEO Seok Lee, has announced an expansion of its QR payment services across Mainland China through integration with the Weixin Pay network operated by Tenpay Global.

With this enhancement, GLN users can now make QR code payments not only at merchants connected to UnionPay International, but also throughout the extensive Weixin Pay merchant network commonly used across China. The broader coverage allows travelers to complete payments smoothly in numerous daily situations, including dining at street vendors, shopping, using public transportation, and paying for taxi services, creating a more convenient experience for visitors.

The new integration further develops GLN’s collaboration with UnionPay International, which began last year, and reinforces the company’s payment infrastructure throughout China. By linking both the UnionPay and Weixin Pay ecosystems, GLN has considerably widened QR payment access for international travelers.

Unlike many traditional overseas payment options that require separate local applications or physical cards, GLN enables customers to pay directly through familiar Korean banking and fintech apps already used domestically. The service is currently supported on platforms such as Purple GLN, Hana OneQ, Hana Money, Hana Card, and Toss, while additional integrations with Naver Pay and KB Star Banking are expected to roll out in phases.

“By broadening our QR payment coverage, travelers can enjoy a smoother and more flexible payment experience across many more everyday situations in China,” said Seok Lee, CEO of GLN International. “We will continue expanding our global payment network so users can enjoy the same easy and convenient payment experience abroad that they are accustomed to at home.”
