As a founding sponsor of Chicagoland Habitat for Humanity, Wesco has played a vital role in supporting home repair initiatives that change lives and foster brighter futures.

Roy, a U.S. Army veteran, dedicated 12 years of service to his country with strength and perseverance. During Operation Desert Storm, he worked as a mechanic, maintaining essential military vehicles under the most demanding conditions to ensure the safety and mobility of his fellow soldiers. His time in the military instilled in him a deep sense of discipline, precision, and steadfast commitment. After completing his service, Roy transitioned into civilian life, applying his technical and security expertise to continue supporting military personnel. He eventually made his home in North Chicago, Illinois, where he spent 28 years creating a lifetime of memories with his family in a house filled with warmth and love.

Over time, however, Roy’s home began to deteriorate. The kitchen floor started to give way, persistent leaks became a source of stress, and the bathroom no longer met his physical needs. Most concerning, safely entering and exiting his home became increasingly difficult. The place that had once been a haven now posed daily challenges, threatening his well-being and independence.

That’s when Lake-McHenry Habitat for Humanity stepped in—offering more than just repairs, but a renewed sense of comfort and peace of mind.

A dedicated team of volunteers set to work, making critical improvements to restore both the structure and spirit of Roy’s home:

A new ramp was installed, allowing Roy to move in and out of his home safely and effortlessly, easing the risk of falls.

The kitchen underwent a full renovation, addressing water damage and structural issues. It is now a safe, welcoming space for family meals and connection.

The bathroom was redesigned to be fully accessible, making daily routines easier and helping Roy regain a sense of dignity and independence.

When the renovations were complete, Roy stood in his revitalized home with gratitude in his eyes. The upgrades meant more than just repairs—they brought renewed safety, comfort, and stability. After years of dedicated service to his country, Roy can now enjoy his home of nearly three decades with confidence and peace.

Thanks to the commitment of Lake-McHenry Habitat for Humanity and their focus on critical home repairs in the Chicagoland area, veterans like Roy receive more than just assistance—they receive hope and the reassurance of a secure home. Habitat remains honored to serve those who have served our nation, ensuring they have a safe and dignified place to call home.

Click here to know more about Wesco's commitments.

Duke Energy has launched a new campaign to promote $200,000 in grant funding for South Carolina organizations that provide services and support to the state’s aging population, especially those facing financial difficulties.

“Nonprofits serving South Carolina’s low-income seniors have reported increased demand for their services in recent years,” said Tim Pearson, Duke Energy’s South Carolina state president. “With an aging population living longer and the rising cost of living, it’s crucial that we ensure seniors, who have contributed so much to our communities, have the resources they need to enjoy their later years with dignity.”

Eligible nonprofits assisting low-income seniors can apply for one-time grants of up to $10,000 through the Duke Energy Foundation to support general operating expenses. These funds cannot be used for weatherization or utility assistance, but can support services such as home-delivered meals, transportation, home modifications, and other programs aimed at maintaining seniors’ safety and independence.

This funding is available exclusively to nonprofit organizations, not individuals. Organizations interested in applying can find more details and submit applications at duke-energy.com/SeniorAssistance. The deadline for applications is January 28.

This initiative builds on previous efforts by the Duke Energy Foundation to support organizations that aid seniors in the state. In 2023, the foundation awarded grants of up to $20,000 to 15 qualifying nonprofits to fund home repairs that help seniors remain in their homes. In 2024, an additional $100,000 in grants was given to 13 organizations with programs providing home ramps for low-income seniors and those with disabilities.

“The response to our past grant announcements has been overwhelming, revealing the vast and diverse needs of these organizations,” said Amanda Dow, director of the Duke Energy Foundation in South Carolina. “We’ve learned that these organizations offer a wide range of essential services, all of which require funding. That’s why this new program is focused on supporting general operations, allowing these organizations to quickly direct funds where they are most needed.”

Many of the seniors who benefit from these programs also face challenges in covering other household expenses, including their electricity bills.

Click here to know more information on how to manage their energy bills.

This hands-on effort demonstrates Wesco’s commitment to fostering strong community ties and addressing the housing needs of local families.

Creating a Better Future Together
The collaboration between Wesco and Habitat for Humanity offers hope to many Central Florida families. As Habitat continues its battle against the affordable housing crisis, partnerships like this are essential.

South Carolina's elderly residents should never have to choose between essential life needs and the ability to live safely in their own homes.

"Being able to enter and leave our homes safely is a fundamental need for everyone," said Mark Champagne, executive director of Sumter United Ministries. "We've heard stories of seniors in our community being physically carried in and out of their homes because they lacked an accessible wheelchair ramp."

To support organizations like Sumter United Ministries, the Duke Energy Foundation is providing $100,000 in grants to 13 organizations across the state that already have home ramp programs for low-income seniors and individuals with disabilities. Each organization is eligible to receive up to $15,000, depending on the size of the population they serve.

"This funding will greatly improve the lives of several homeowners in our area," Champagne said.

"Safety is at the core of everything we do at Duke Energy," said Mike Callahan, Duke Energy's South Carolina state president. "A simple improvement, such as building a ramp, can significantly enhance the quality of life for our seniors. These grants will bring real freedom and security to those who receive this support."

The grants have been awarded to the following organizations:

AIM (Anderson County) – $15,000

Caring and Sharing (Williamsburg County) – $2,500

Greenwood Community Home Repairs – $5,000

Habitat for Humanity (Greenville County) – $15,000

Habitat for Humanity (Spartanburg County) – $15,000

Habitat for Humanity (York County) – $5,000

Helping Florence Flourish – $5,000

Home Works of America (Marlboro County) – $2,500

KARE of Kershaw – $5,000

Lighthouse Ministries (Florence County) – $10,000

Rebuild Upstate (Oconee and Pickens counties) – $10,000

Sumter United Ministries – $7,500

United Way (Clarendon County) – $2,500

This year’s grants build on the Duke Energy Foundation’s ongoing commitment to supporting South Carolina organizations that carry out essential home repairs for seniors. In 2023, the Senior Home Repair Program provided $225,000 in grants to 15 nonprofits, with awards of up to $20,000 through a proposal request process.

“The response to last year’s grants was overwhelming and highlighted the depth of the need,” said Amanda Dow, director of the Duke Energy Foundation in South Carolina. “After closely reviewing the programs doing this important work, we narrowed this year’s focus to home ramp programs to better target the funds and help more individuals.”

In addition to funding, Duke Energy employees will be volunteering with several of the recipient organizations to help build ramps in communities within its service area, which includes over 830,000 retail electric customers across the Pee Dee and Upstate regions.

“We are thrilled to receive this grant, which will enable Rebuild Upstate to install ramps for multiple seniors, ensuring their safe access to their homes and helping them age in place,” said Jake Beaty, CEO of Rebuild Upstate. “We’re honored to partner with Duke Energy in serving our neighbors in need.”

For more information on eligibility for support, individuals are encouraged to reach out to the grant recipient organizations.

Discover the inspiring story of Mattie, a Habitat for Humanity homeowner in Rochester, New York, who was struggling to make ends meet due to health issues and the impact of COVID-19. Thanks to Habitat’s Cost of Home campaign, Mattie learned about the Homeowner Assistance Fund, which provides support to homeowners at risk of default and foreclosure.

Through this program, Mattie was able to receive assistance and maintain the security and stability of her beloved home and community.

In the realm of affordable housing, both Ohio's Preble Habitat and Habitat Michigan have shown exceptional leadership in advocating for the supply and preservation of homes. Preble Habitat, for instance, lobbied for $50,000 of local CARES funding to be earmarked for a housing program aimed at assisting homeowners with mortgage and utility payments.

Their executive director also chaired the working committee responsible for allocating these funds, which will ultimately benefit around 50 individuals. Meanwhile, Habitat Michigan spearheaded a sign-on letter that effectively influenced Governor Whitmer to allot $100 million from the state's American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) budget for housing assistance. With this remarkable move, approximately 6,000 residents in Michigan will receive much-needed support for their housing needs.

Exciting Developments in Affordable Housing Efforts
Habitat for Humanity's Richmond affiliate has teamed up with the local economic development committee and the Wayne County Foundation to push for more affordable housing options in the city's revitalization plans. By partnering with neighborhood associations through the Neighborhood Involvement and Community Engagement (NICE) Program, they secured funds to construct 15 homes, promoting inclusivity and accessibility for all.

Meanwhile, in Cincinnati, Habitat for Humanity of Greater Cincinnati is making a significant commitment to the Lower Price Hill neighborhood. They have partnered with parents of students at the community's central school to provide affordable homeownership opportunities. However, the rehab process can be costly and time-consuming, and their initial funding request for a 46-unit apartment rehab project was denied by the City of Cincinnati. Undeterred, Habitat Greater Cincinnati joined forces with three other nonprofits to advocate for the funding. They even testified at a Cincinnati Council committee hearing to encourage the city to invest in the project. Thanks to their tireless efforts, the City Administration ultimately committed $1 million to the project, which is set to improve housing conditions for an estimated 96 individuals. Habitat for Humanity's dedication to promoting affordable housing solutions continues to benefit communities across the country.

Prepare to be inspired by the efforts of Central Berkshire Habitat for Humanity in Pittsfield, Massachusetts! Their tireless advocacy has resulted in two major wins for their community. First, they led the charge to establish the At-Home in Pittsfield program, a groundbreaking initiative that provides exterior renovation loans to eligible homeowners. Central Berkshire Habitat played a pivotal role in championing this program, and will continue to be a key partner in its implementation. This policy win will result in a whopping $500,000 for the city to use in supporting homeowners in need.

But that's not all! Central Berkshire Habitat went above and beyond by petitioning Governor Baker for COVID relief funding for non-profits and small businesses. And their hard work paid off - the governor approved a staggering $78,500,000 for organizations that have been hit hard by the pandemic. Thanks to the unwavering dedication of Central Berkshire Habitat for Humanity, the community of Pittsfield can breathe a little easier knowing that help is on the way.

Reimagining Access to Credit and Affordable Homes
In the face of predatory lending practices and perpetual debt traps, Habitat for Humanity affiliates in Michigan banded together to fight against House Bill 5097, a proposed legislation that would have allowed payday lenders to give out small loans with exorbitant fees and no term limits. Habitat for Humanity of Michigan and affiliates across the state collaborated with several other housing organizations to meet with 35 legislators, urging them to vote against the bill. Thanks to their advocacy efforts, HB 5097 ultimately died before getting a vote in the Michigan Senate committee.

Meanwhile, Habitat affiliates in Ohio, Michigan, and beyond have been tirelessly advocating for more affordable housing options and critical home repairs. Habitat Michigan's successful push for budget items in Senate Bill 565 relating to missing middle housing and development of a Housing and Community Development Fund was a major victory for the state's network of affiliates and partner organizations like Community Economic Development Association of Michigan (CEDAM), Michigan Community Capital, and the Michigan State Land Bank. Habitat Ohio's successful lobbying efforts resulted in an increase of Ohio Housing Trust Fund grant allocation from $90,000 to $500,000 over a two-year period, enabling them to serve 50 families statewide.

But the fight for affordable housing doesn't stop there. In partnership with the Marion Housing Coalition, Buckeye Ridge Habitat for Humanity advocated for The Marion County Land Bank to adopt 10 recommendations focused on neighborhood revitalization, rehabilitation standards, threshold requirements for purchasing Land Bank properties, and developing capacity for affordable housing. These efforts demonstrate Habitat's unwavering commitment to empowering communities and providing access to safe, decent, and affordable homes for all.

In the great state of Indiana, Habitat for Humanity affiliates united in opposition against Indian SB 352, a potentially harmful policy that could have targeted low-income families with high-cost subprime lending. Drawing on their collective strength, they reached out to legislators and leveraged the influence of their board to advocate for the well-being of these vulnerable households. Thanks to their tireless coalition efforts, the bill was thwarted and did not come to a vote, thus safeguarding low-income families in the state from the perils of predatory lending.

As we continue to broaden our reach and amplify our impact through policy solutions at the local, state, and federal levels across the United States, we humbly acknowledge the invaluable support of Whirlpool Corporation. Together, we aspire to create a world where every individual has access to the secure and dignified shelter they deserve, and we are thrilled to work in tandem towards achieving this noble goal.
