The Corporation for Independent Living (CIL), a nonprofit real estate developer focused on creating community-based housing for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD), acquired brain injuries (ABI), and behavioral health needs, has secured a $45 million line of credit from KeyBank. This includes a $20 million expandable facility, enabling CIL to expand its operations across the continental United States—a significant step toward becoming a nationwide leader in housing solutions for people with disabilities.

With this financial support, CIL will invest in acquiring, renovating, and building residential properties in collaboration with nonprofit service organizations. Unlike the previous credit line, which restricted projects to certain areas, this new agreement removes those geographic barriers, giving CIL the flexibility to serve communities wherever demand is highest.

“We chose KeyBank intentionally because they understand the mission-driven nature of our work,” said Maria Green, CIL’s Chief Financial Officer. “Together with Webster Bank, Westfield Bank, and Rockland Trust, we now have partners who share our vision and are committed to helping us grow.”

CIL President and CEO Kent Schwendy emphasized the broader impact of the credit facility: “This isn’t just funding—it’s a tool that enables us to partner with organizations in any state ready to develop inclusive, community-based housing.”

KeyBank Market President Matthew Hummel echoed that commitment: “We’re proud to support CIL in providing affordable housing and supportive environments for individuals who need them most.”

Since its inception over 45 years ago, CIL has partnered with nonprofit service providers to create homes that promote independence and dignity for individuals requiring care. At the end of each lease term, CIL donates the property to the service provider—aligning long-term support with community empowerment.

The organization’s ability to operate nationally comes at a time when the disability services sector is grappling with challenges in staffing, funding, and housing availability.

“Our role is to manage the real estate side,” Schwendy said. “That way, providers can stay focused on delivering quality care.”

As a founding sponsor of Chicagoland Habitat for Humanity, Wesco has played a vital role in supporting home repair initiatives that change lives and foster brighter futures.

Roy, a U.S. Army veteran, dedicated 12 years of service to his country with strength and perseverance. During Operation Desert Storm, he worked as a mechanic, maintaining essential military vehicles under the most demanding conditions to ensure the safety and mobility of his fellow soldiers. His time in the military instilled in him a deep sense of discipline, precision, and steadfast commitment. After completing his service, Roy transitioned into civilian life, applying his technical and security expertise to continue supporting military personnel. He eventually made his home in North Chicago, Illinois, where he spent 28 years creating a lifetime of memories with his family in a house filled with warmth and love.

Over time, however, Roy’s home began to deteriorate. The kitchen floor started to give way, persistent leaks became a source of stress, and the bathroom no longer met his physical needs. Most concerning, safely entering and exiting his home became increasingly difficult. The place that had once been a haven now posed daily challenges, threatening his well-being and independence.

That’s when Lake-McHenry Habitat for Humanity stepped in—offering more than just repairs, but a renewed sense of comfort and peace of mind.

A dedicated team of volunteers set to work, making critical improvements to restore both the structure and spirit of Roy’s home:

A new ramp was installed, allowing Roy to move in and out of his home safely and effortlessly, easing the risk of falls.

The kitchen underwent a full renovation, addressing water damage and structural issues. It is now a safe, welcoming space for family meals and connection.

The bathroom was redesigned to be fully accessible, making daily routines easier and helping Roy regain a sense of dignity and independence.

When the renovations were complete, Roy stood in his revitalized home with gratitude in his eyes. The upgrades meant more than just repairs—they brought renewed safety, comfort, and stability. After years of dedicated service to his country, Roy can now enjoy his home of nearly three decades with confidence and peace.

Thanks to the commitment of Lake-McHenry Habitat for Humanity and their focus on critical home repairs in the Chicagoland area, veterans like Roy receive more than just assistance—they receive hope and the reassurance of a secure home. Habitat remains honored to serve those who have served our nation, ensuring they have a safe and dignified place to call home.

Click here to know more about Wesco's commitments.
