John Donovan, a Navy veteran with a service-connected disability, has been unanimously elected national commander of Disabled American Veterans (DAV), an organization representing nearly one million members. His election took place during DAV’s 104th National Convention in Orlando, Florida.

Addressing more than 2,000 DAV members and supporters following his election, Donovan emphasized that his leadership would be centered on listening, collaboration, and direct engagement with veterans and local communities.

“As your National Commander, I promise that you will see me in your chapters and communities. I will listen far more than I speak. I will celebrate your successes, learn from your ideas, and work beside you,” Donovan said. He added that DAV leadership is not about remaining behind a podium, but about working alongside members, addressing challenges collectively, and advancing the organization’s mission together.

Donovan’s election follows his service as DAV’s national senior vice commander, a position he was elected to at the organization’s 2025 National Convention in Las Vegas. He most recently served as adjutant for the Department of Arkansas and as vice chairperson of DAV’s national board of directors. Earlier, he represented District 21 on DAV’s National Executive Committee from 2019 through 2021 and was also a member of the organization’s national board of directors during those years.

His commitment to veterans extends well beyond his leadership roles. Donovan has consistently supported veterans in his Arkansas community through hands-on volunteer efforts. Since the DAV 5K was first introduced, he has taken part in every race. He has also helped coordinate neighborhood cleanup efforts and wheelchair ramp construction, worked alongside community organizations to assist veterans facing homelessness, and collaborated with food banks to help veteran households dealing with food insecurity.

Veteran suicide prevention has also been an important part of Donovan’s advocacy work. In Arkansas, he has worked with businesses and veterans organizations to increase awareness, strengthen outreach, and connect veterans experiencing crises with needed resources and support.

A life member of DAV Chapter 10 in Conway, Arkansas, Donovan begins his national commander term with several priorities, including helping veterans obtain the benefits they have earned, reinforcing the Department of Veterans Affairs, advocating for caregivers and survivors, and upholding the commitments made to those who served in the military.

DAV National Adjutant Barry Jesinoski praised Donovan’s extensive service to the organization and the veteran community.

“Commander Donovan has earned the respect of his fellow veterans at DAV through years of dedicated service,” Jesinoski said. He noted that Donovan is widely respected for his work on behalf of veterans and will be an important leader as DAV addresses key legislative priorities affecting its members.

Recently, a collaboration between U.S. Bank, Freedom Alliance, and True Homes resulted in a remarkable gesture of gratitude towards a military veteran. Private Second Class Roy Garcia of the U.S. Army, along with his family, were the proud recipients of a mortgage-free home in Monroe, North Carolina. Garcia had joined the Army as an infantryman in 2008 and was deployed to one of Afghanistan’s most perilous regions, Kunar Province, two years later.

Tom Kilgannon, the president of Freedom Alliance, acknowledged Garcia’s service and sacrifice for the country. He noted that many veterans like Garcia grapple with the physical and emotional aftermath of war. The provision of this home is expected to aid Garcia in supporting his family and concentrating on his recovery.

Since 2013, U.S. Bank and Freedom Alliance have collectively donated 25 homes, amounting to a total value of $5.75 million.

To learn more about the generous home donation to the Garcia family, click here.
