Stand Up To Cancer (SU2C) has expanded its Scientific Advisory Committee with the appointment of several new members. The 30-member committee, led by a chair and supported by two vice-chairs, plays a central role in shaping the organization's research funding priorities and providing guidance on key scientific initiatives.

Throughout its 18-year history, SU2C's Scientific Advisory Committee has brought together many of the nation's foremost cancer researchers from a wide range of specialties and institutions, ensuring diverse scientific expertise and informed decision-making.

"The field of cancer research continues to advance at an extraordinary pace, creating both exciting opportunities and new challenges in our mission to accelerate meaningful progress against cancer," said SU2C President and CEO Julian Adams, PhD. "The Scientific Advisory Committee is essential to our ability to build on our legacy of funding transformative research that delivers real benefits for patients and their families."

The Scientific Advisory Committee is chaired by William G. Nelson, MD, PhD, Director of the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. Serving as vice-chairs are John Carpten, PhD, Director of the City of Hope Cancer Center, and Arnold Levine, PhD, Emeritus Professor at the Institute for Advanced Study.

In the month of November, Cadence is expressing gratitude towards its Veteran employees, honoring their service, and acknowledging their significant contributions to the company’s success. Cadence has established a Veterans Inclusion Group, with members spread across its U.S. locations, who are actively involved in organizing enjoyable and informative events to celebrate Veterans Day. Furthermore, the group members and leaders of the Veterans Inclusion Group have jointly chosen two organizations dedicated to assisting U.S. Veterans and their families, to which Cadence will contribute donations.

Speaker Showcase Cadence employees will have the opportunity to listen to Dr. David Smith, PhD, a former Navy pilot and a Veteran, who is actively working towards promoting inclusion in the military. Dr. Smith’s illustrious 30-year military career includes leading a combat squadron and logging more than 3,000 flying hours, equivalent to approximately four months. Currently, as an associate professor at Johns Hopkins Carey Business School, he leverages his sociology training to investigate gender biases in performance evaluations, retention, and dual-career and military families. He has also written books on gender bias and workplace equity and is a renowned speaker on this subject globally. We eagerly anticipate learning from his military experiences and understanding how we can be better allies.

Veteran Employee Spotlight We had the privilege to engage with our Veteran employees and listen to their inspiring stories of achievement in education, overcoming extraordinary circumstances, and utilizing skills gained in the military during their transition into the technology industry.

“My four years of active military service provided me with a jump-start into a career working with electronics. The transition from military service through college, and ultimately into the EDA world, has been more rewarding than I could have imagined. Now, I get to work on leading-edge technology and help bring innovation into our daily lives,” - Bob Jolly, Application Engineer Architect.

“I served in the U.S. Navy as an electronics technician for five years on submarines and as a mineman in the Reserves for another three. I followed that with a small break in service and joined the US Coast Guard, where I am currently in the reserves and am just completing my 15th year. A few interesting things from my experience: I’ve called my wife from 400 feet underwater in Alaska, traversed the Panama Canal, and I have been in three underwater fires—not fun! All of these and other adventures have helped me stay cool, think under pressure, and avoid getting rattled. I have seen tech used in the field and have “MacGyvered” some to produce unique solutions, which is a skill that I have leveraged throughout my professional technology career,” - Gary Lytle, Product Management Director.
 
“Four years of active service and six years of part-time service with our military, focusing on RF communications and music, provided me with the skills to earn my master’s degree in electrical engineering from Arizona State University, a bachelor’s in guitar performance from Berklee College of Music, and a rewarding career at Cadence. The transition from military service to the technology industry equipped me for success and has allowed me to accomplish incredible things. I am proud to continue to support our military and defense customers through my work as a civilian,” - Shawn Mills, Principal Application Engineer.
