Chemours China recently wrapped up its 8th annual Chemours Magical Science Camp (MSC), sparking renewed interest in science and exploration among participants. This year’s event featured a live-stream format that connected four interactive scientific challenges, providing an engaging and dynamic experience for attendees. The live stream attracted nearly 3,000 viewers, while around 1,200 young participants from 26 provinces and cities across China took part.

The 2024 camp introduced an exciting storyline that guided participants through a series of scientific puzzles and challenges, immersing them in hands-on exploration. Students engaged in real-time problem-solving, experimental activities, and direct interaction with instructors, experiencing the full scope of scientific discovery.

The event began with the “Vanishing Footprints” experiment, where students used a pH indicator to reveal vibrant magenta footprints, leading them on a treasure hunt. The second challenge, “Liquid Movers,” appeared simple but encompassed various scientific principles such as Bernoulli's principle, siphoning, paper fiber absorption, and transparency in crystalline materials. Students worked to make water flow uphill, while paper flowers nourished by the water revealed hidden numbers. The third challenge, “Magic Magnifier,” combined physics and chemistry, as participants used pH indicators and optical filters to decipher secret equations embedded in colorful statements. The final challenge, “Mini Hot Air Balloon,” demonstrated the reaction between citric acid and sodium carbonate, producing carbon dioxide that inflated a balloon without the need for breath. After each challenge, a short classroom session helped deepen students' understanding of the scientific concepts involved in a fun, interactive manner.

Victor Mao, General Manager of Chemours China, commented, “The Chemours Magical Science Camp exemplifies our commitment to Chemours' 2030 Corporate Responsibility goals, particularly our focus on expanding STEM education. We aim to create an innovative platform for young people to connect with science through exciting experiments and expert explanations. Beyond the camp, we reached out to nearly ten rural elementary schools this year, bringing STEM education to students in remote areas. We look forward to continuing our efforts to create stronger, more vibrant communities.”

As part of its Corporate Responsibility strategy, Chemours is enhancing community vibrancy by increasing access to STEM education, safety initiatives, and environmental sustainability programs. The company seeks to inspire the next generation of STEM leaders by broadening access to these crucial fields. Since 2017, the Chemours Magical Science Camp, designed for students aged 9 to 13, has drawn thousands of enthusiastic young minds eager to explore science and creativity.

If you were a kid in the 1970s, you were almost certainly terrified of going into the ocean - a fear instilled in you by the Jaws movies. However, according to the International Shark Attack File, there are only about 72 unprovoked shark attacks worldwide each year, which is a relatively small number given the many sleepless nights and swimming phobias caused by a fear of sharks.

The far more terrifying reality is that the much-maligned shark has long been under attack from its greatest predator: us. In any given year, humans kill well over 100 million sharks. This week on Sea Change Radio, we speak with Mongabay reporter Philip Jacobson about one Chinese-based fishing company's illegal shark-finning practices, why he believes this practice is far from unique, and what efforts are being made to save this important apex predator.

Sands Cares Ambassadors in Macao have had a busy year. Sands China's Team Member volunteer corps works to strengthen the local community by addressing disaster and pandemic preparedness, hunger relief, and other social services such as caring for the elderly and assisting vulnerable residents, families in need, and youth living with disabilities.

In 2022, Sands China continued to address pandemic and disaster preparedness needs for local residents. In June, nearly 50 Sands Cares Ambassadors put together 800 hygiene and emergency response kits, which contained COVID-19 Rapid Antigen Tests (RATs) and a variety of pandemic preparation and emergency items inside a multi-functional waterproof bag.

The majority of these kits were distributed by five Macao-based service organizations to vulnerable groups such as the elderly and low-income families. Sands Cares Ambassadors also staffed COVID-19 testing stations around the clock for two testing drives, including support for people who required special assistance, such as the elderly, families with infants and children, pregnant women, and people with disabilities.

Sands Cares Ambassadors also planned enrichment activities for youth living with disabilities and hosted a group of Concordia School of Special Education students, families, and teachers at a concert in The Parisian Theatre in honor of World Autism Day on April 2. Sands Cares Ambassadors hosted nearly 50 local students and Macau Special Olympics members for a day of miniature golf lessons and other activities at The Venetian Macao in early June.

Sands Cares Ambassadors are also interested in assisting vulnerable families. Sands Cares Ambassadors took part in the first global Sands Cares Food Kit Build on May 27, assembling 2,600 kits of food staples for distribution through long-term partner Caritas Macau. Sands Cares Ambassadors also assisted in the distribution of food kits to families. Sands Cares Ambassadors assisted the Holy House of Mercy Welfare Shop in distributing nearly 400 food hampers to disadvantaged families in time for the Lunar New Year in February.

Caring for the elderly is another area where Sands Cares Ambassadors excel. In February, nearly 150 Ambassadors continued a tradition of visiting the homes of elderly residents during the Lunar New Year holiday to provide warmth and companionship. For the past 13 years, ambassadors have participated in this activity. Other 2022 initiatives have included hosting members of local community organizations at Sands China properties and providing them with the opportunity to promote their work at Sands resort booths with volunteer support from Sands Cares Ambassadors.

“The efforts of our dedicated Sands Cares Ambassadors reflect the deep commitment Sands has to strengthening our local communities,” said Dr. Wilfred Wong, president of Sands China Ltd. “It is a commitment that every Team Member holds and goes hand-in-hand with the service we provide within our resorts. For everyone at Sands China, the Macao community is part of our family, and our Ambassadors are on the front lines of helping ensure the well-being of local residents.”

Since 2009, Sands Cares Ambassadors have volunteered 175,000 hours as part of the global community engagement program Sands Cares. Sands Cares' mission is to keep local communities strong by addressing urgent social issues and assisting in maximizing the local community's heritage, attractions, and opportunities for growth.

To learn more about the ways Sands supports local communities, and download its 2021 Environmental, Social and Governance Report, click here.

The Arbor Day Foundation and J.M. Huber Corporation ("Huber") are expanding their collaboration to focus tree planting efforts on forests and neighborhoods in the United States and around the world that need trees the most. The partnership will support nine reforestation projects this year, as well as an urban community tree planting event and additional tree planting opportunities for Huber employees.

Reforestation efforts in the United States will take place in the Catskill Mountains of New York and at various project sites throughout North Carolina, with international projects taking place in Brazil, China, France, and Germany. In France, Huber will collaborate with the Foundation's local planting partner to offer a community tree planting opportunity in Montrouge, just a few miles south of Paris. The event will involve the planting of 1,000 trees by Huber team members and community volunteers in order to improve the community's urban forest and provide ecological benefits to residents.

Furthermore, Huber will fund the distribution of hundreds of trees to their Georgia workforce in early 2023 through the Foundation's Community Canopy program, which ships individual trees to local employees' homes. In addition, the program will provide educational tools and information to ensure that the trees are planted in the best possible location to maximize environmental benefits.

“We are thrilled to be working with Huber to help increase our ability to plant the right trees in the right places, worldwide,” said Dan Lambe, Arbor Day Foundation’s CEO. “This multi-faceted partnership is a great way to invite people from many walks of life to participate in vitally important ecosystem preservation efforts and experience the true power that trees have in our communities.”

The Arbor Day Foundation has worked for nearly 500 million trees to be planted in forests and communities around the world over the last 50 years. The Foundation facilitates projects that enable organizations of all sizes to achieve their sustainability goals through measurable, impactful work with trees and forests through a global network of partnerships. The Foundation recently announced a five-year initiative to plant 500 million trees in forests and communities in need.

“Supporting high-impact environmental causes is essential to achieving our sustainability goals and is one of the foundational pillars of our Huber Helps program,” said Don Young, EVP & Chief Sustainability Officer of Huber.

“By engaging employees in a community planting event and inviting them to plant their own tree at home, we are seeking to demonstrate Huber’ commitment to carbon reduction through the power of trees, while also supporting the growth and protection of forest ecosystems across the planet.”

Huber has had a long-standing commitment to philanthropy and community engagement (cash, in-kind product donations, and employee volunteerism) to support a wide range of worthy charitable initiatives in the communities where its employees and shareholders live and work since its inception in 1883. The company has pledged to donate 1% of its annual net income to organizations that support affordable housing, education and wellness, and the environment.

J.M. Huber and the Foundation plan to plant a variety of tree species, including longleaf pine stands, on reclaimed minelands in West Virginia in 2021 to help restore endemic wildlife habitat in the lower Mississippi River Valley. As these trees grow and mature, the impact of these projects will help improve degraded landscapes and former forests for future generations, providing benefits such as flood mitigation, carbon sequestration, and improved wildlife habitat.
