      <div style="text-align: justify;">For thousands of Kenyans living with type 2 diabetes or hypertension, managing a chronic illness involves far more than following a doctor’s instructions or taking prescribed medicines. At its heart, it is a question of access. <br />   <br />  Access may involve how far a patient must travel to reach a health facility, whether they can afford their medicines, or how much working time they lose while seeking care. Even the cost of public transport can become a significant burden when repeated clinic visits are required. For some families, attending a routine appointment may mean leaving children or elderly relatives without supervision or sacrificing income that is essential to household expenses. <br />   <br />  “For many patients, access isn’t just about distance—it’s about time, income, and the choices no one should have to make,” says Hale Asikoglu Erkol, Head of Sustainable Development for Generations, India, Middle East, Turkey and Africa. <br />   <br />  These barriers can make it difficult for patients to maintain treatment consistently. Interruptions in care can have serious consequences, including complications that could have been avoided, hospital admissions that might have been prevented and, in the most severe cases, loss of life. <br />   <br />  <strong>A mounting healthcare burden</strong> <br />  Non-communicable diseases are becoming an increasingly serious health challenge in Kenya. More than 1.8 million adults are estimated to be living with diabetes, while around 5.5 million adults between the ages of 30 and 79 have hypertension. Yet only about 16% of those with hypertension are currently receiving treatment. <br />   <br />  The problem is particularly pronounced in rural and underserved areas, where affordable and continuous healthcare can be difficult to access. <br />   <br />  For many patients, the obstacle is not a lack of willingness to manage their health. Instead, the healthcare system can demand considerable amounts of travel, time and money—making long-term treatment difficult to maintain. <br />   <br />  It is this gap that the Access to Healthcare program in Kenya seeks to address. <br />   <br />  <strong>Putting patients at the centre of continuous care</strong> <br />  Introduced in Kenya in 2022 by Boehringer Ingelheim, the Access to Healthcare program takes a comprehensive, patient-focused approach to managing type 2 diabetes and hypertension. <br />   <br />  The initiative is designed to tackle multiple barriers rather than concentrating on just one. It aims to bring healthcare services closer to communities, make medicines more affordable and ensure that patients continue to receive support throughout their treatment journey. <br />   <br />  A key component is its tiered pricing structure, which allows eligible patients to obtain medicines at reduced and more affordable prices. However, the program recognises that access to medicine by itself does not guarantee successful long-term disease management. <br />   <br />  Patients also need ongoing guidance, follow-up and encouragement. To provide this continuity, nurses conduct regular follow-up with participants for a minimum of 12 months, helping them stay engaged with their treatment and better manage their conditions. <br />   <br />  <strong>A healthcare journey built around the patient</strong> <br />  <strong>Screening</strong> <br />  Community pop-up clinics bring screening services into neighbourhoods where conventional healthcare facilities may be difficult to reach. Patients can undergo testing and, where necessary, receive referrals for further care. <br />   <br />  <strong>Diagnosis</strong> <br />  Doctors confirm patients’ diagnoses, after which an independent team determines whether they meet the criteria for participation in the program. <br />   <br />  <strong>Enrollment</strong> <br />  Patients who qualify are provided with access to affordable medicines and connected with a nurse who will support them throughout their ongoing care. <br />   <br />  <strong>Follow-up</strong> <br />  For at least 12 months, nurses and health coaches remain engaged with patients, providing advice, helping encourage adherence to treatment and facilitating medication refills. <br />  This approach creates a continuous pathway rather than treating healthcare as a series of isolated clinic visits. For patients managing chronic conditions, that ongoing relationship can be particularly important. <br />   <br />  <strong>Partnerships driving the program</strong> <br />  The Access to Healthcare initiative is based on the understanding that meaningful healthcare innovation requires collaboration. Its implementation brings together organisations with different areas of expertise. <br />   <br />  <strong>Zuri Health</strong> <br />  Zuri Health oversees the patient journey from screening and referrals through enrollment and follow-up. It also uses digital channels, including SMS and USSD, to make healthcare engagement more accessible. <br />   <br />  <strong>Mission for Essential Drugs and Supplies (MEDS)</strong> <br />  MEDS helps make medicines available at affordable prices while supporting healthcare facilities through dependable medicine distribution. <br />   <br />  <strong>AMPATH</strong> <br />  AMPATH contributes to implementation through a network of 20 facilities, supporting physician-led enrollment of eligible patients. <br />   <br />  <strong>mPharma</strong> <br />  mPharma provides data support by monitoring patient numbers, enrollment and treatment adherence across the initiative. <br />   <br />  Working together, these organisations help address the different dimensions of healthcare access—location, affordability and clinical support. The program's collaboration with local stakeholders also allows it to work within existing healthcare structures, build local capacity and develop solutions that are better suited to the realities faced by communities. <br />   <br />  <strong>Taking access to healthcare to a larger scale</strong></div>    <ul>  	<li style="text-align: justify;"><strong>Reach:</strong> More than 140,000 people reached and screened</li>  	<li style="text-align: justify;"><strong>Treatment:</strong> More than 10,000 patients currently receiving care</li>  	<li style="text-align: justify;"><strong>Network:</strong> Over 30 hospitals, clinics and community healthcare facilities involved</li>  	<li style="text-align: justify;"><strong>Coaching:</strong> More than 20,000 coaching sessions completed</li>  </ul>    <div style="text-align: justify;">Since its introduction, the program has expanded considerably. Behind these numbers are people who have gained access to screening, treatment and ongoing support, reducing the need to navigate chronic disease management without assistance. <br />   <br />  <strong>The role of Zuri Health</strong> <br />  As a social entrepreneur supported through Boehringer Ingelheim’s Social Business initiative, Zuri Health has become an important part of the program's implementation. <br />   <br />  In 2023, Zuri Health became part of the Social Business Accelerator program, where it piloted a continuous-care approach for people living with hypertension and diabetes. Findings from the pilot highlighted a recurring problem: patients in rural communities frequently stopped treatment because obtaining medicines was difficult and ongoing follow-up was limited. <br />   <br />  “When treatment stops, it’s rarely because patients don’t care. It’s because the system makes continuity too hard,” says Ikechukwu Anoke, Founder &amp; CEO of Zuri Health. <br />   <br />  Zuri Health's emphasis on supporting patients throughout their entire care journey, particularly those living in rural areas, made it well suited to the initiative. Through mobile health camps and community clinics, the organisation has screened and enrolled thousands of people, helping expand both the program's reach and its ability to provide continuing care. <br />   <br />  <strong>Creating pathways to healthier communities</strong> <br />  The Access to Healthcare program represents more than an individual healthcare initiative. It forms part of a wider effort to improve access to treatment in communities where conventional healthcare systems can leave significant gaps. <br />   <br />  By bringing together funding, expertise, healthcare providers and community-based organisations, the initiative seeks to address practical barriers that prevent people from receiving consistent care. At the same time, it aims to strengthen healthcare pathways so they become more inclusive, sustainable and resilient. <br />   <br />  Ultimately, improving healthcare access is about making it easier for people to remain connected to the care they need. When the practical obstacles to treatment are reduced, patients have a better opportunity to manage chronic conditions and improve their quality of life.</div>

   <title>Salta Stroke 360°: Transforming Stroke Care Through Telemedicine</title>

      <p style="text-align: justify;">What began as a stroke-response simulation quickly became something far more significant. During a training exercise, clinicians were working through hypothetical emergency scenarios when an actual patient arrived with obvious symptoms of an acute stroke. Instead of pausing to reassess, the team immediately put its training into action. Care was delivered quickly and collaboratively, and the patient survived.<o:p></o:p> <br />    <p style="text-align: justify;">Remarkably, the same thing happened again only a few days later.<o:p></o:p> <br />    <p style="text-align: justify;">Two genuine stroke emergencies handled successfully in quick succession demonstrated that the results were not simply a matter of chance. The teams were prepared. These incidents provided some of the earliest tangible evidence of what Salta Stroke 360° was designed to achieve: creating a coordinated healthcare system capable of responding effectively when a real emergency occurs and every second can influence the outcome. <br />  <o:p></o:p> <br />    <h2 style="text-align: justify;"><span lang="EN-US">When Distance Can Shape a Patient's Future<o:p></o:p></span></h2>    <p style="text-align: justify;">Stroke remains among the world's major causes of death and lasting disability. In geographically challenging areas such as Salta province in northwestern Argentina, the problem can be even more difficult. Communities are widely dispersed, while specialist medical expertise is not always readily available.<o:p></o:p> <br />    <p style="text-align: justify;">For stroke patients, the clock can begin working against them well before they arrive at a hospital. Long travel distances, delays in accessing appropriate care, and disconnected healthcare pathways can all reduce the opportunity for effective treatment. In a condition where rapid intervention is critical, these barriers can determine whether a patient makes a meaningful recovery or faces permanent disability.<o:p></o:p> <br />    <p style="text-align: justify;">Across rural Salta, local health centers serve as important links between remote and specialized healthcare. They support families living far from major medical facilities, often across difficult terrain and in areas where healthcare resources are limited. Indigenous communities in particular can face significant challenges in reaching specialized stroke services.<o:p></o:p> <br />    <p style="text-align: justify;">Salta Stroke 360° was developed in response to these realities. The program brings together Boehringer Ingelheim Argentina, hospitals, public authorities, NGOs, and international organizations, with formal backing from the Ministry of Health.<o:p></o:p> <br />    <p style="text-align: justify;">A central figure in the clinical effort is Dr. Gabriela Orzuza, a neurologist and Medical Director of the Stroke Unit at Hospital San Bernardo. Under her leadership, the unit earned international recognition as an Essential Stroke Unit from the World Stroke Organization.<o:p></o:p> <br />    <p style="text-align: justify;">For Dr. Orzuza, the mission is also personal. A native of Salta, she has spent years developing multidisciplinary networks aimed at strengthening stroke services in one of Argentina's most underserved regions. Rural and Indigenous populations, in particular, can experience significant difficulties accessing specialized healthcare.<o:p></o:p> <br />    <p style="text-align: justify;">“When I first imagined a tele-stroke network,” she recalls, “I saw both the need and the obligation to offer equity. But at the time, it felt like an impossible dream—something we could only approach in very small steps.” <br />  <o:p></o:p> <br />    <h2 style="text-align: justify;"><span lang="EN-US">Turning an Ambition Into an Operating System<o:p></o:p></span></h2>    <p style="text-align: justify;">Those incremental efforts eventually developed into a functioning healthcare network.<o:p></o:p> <br />    <p style="text-align: justify;">Telemedicine now allows neurologists based in Salta's capital to connect with healthcare professionals in remote hospitals, providing specialist guidance in real time when traveling to see a specialist is not practical. Making such a system work requires more than a video connection. Reliable communications, high-quality diagnostic imaging, rapid decision-making, and close coordination all have to work together.<o:p></o:p> <br />    <p style="text-align: justify;">The initiative also recognizes that effective stroke response starts outside the hospital.<o:p></o:p> <br />    <p style="text-align: justify;">Emergency responders, community representatives, and personnel working in places where large numbers of people gather—including airports, businesses, and public institutions—are being taught how to identify stroke symptoms and initiate the appropriate emergency procedures. By preparing these locations in advance, the province is creating a wider network of environments capable of responding to neurological emergencies.<o:p></o:p> <br />    <p style="text-align: justify;">Community education is another important component. NGOs and schools help spread information about recognizing stroke and understanding the importance of seeking immediate medical assistance. In communities that have historically been underserved, communications are tailored to local cultural contexts and, where appropriate, delivered in Indigenous languages. This helps ensure that the message is understandable, relevant, and accessible. <br />  <o:p></o:p> <br />    <h2 style="text-align: justify;"><span lang="EN-US">A Commitment to Equity Backed by Action<o:p></o:p></span></h2>    <p style="text-align: justify;">The underlying purpose of the initiative is also reflected in its leadership.<o:p></o:p> <br />    <p style="text-align: justify;">Martín Cottone, General Manager of Boehringer Ingelheim Argentina, describes one of the early realizations that shaped the program: a person's chances of surviving a stroke could vary significantly depending on how far they lived from appropriate medical care.<o:p></o:p> <br />    <p style="text-align: justify;">For Cottone, that disparity created a responsibility to reconsider how stroke services were being delivered.<o:p></o:p> <br />    <p style="text-align: justify;">The initiative therefore became an opportunity to challenge conventional approaches and create new forms of collaboration between government authorities, medical professionals, and local communities.<o:p></o:p> <br />    <p style="text-align: justify;">The results are increasingly visible. Remote hospitals that previously faced major barriers to delivering timely stroke care are now demonstrating that rapid treatment is possible even outside major urban centers. These outcomes show what can happen when a clear social purpose is combined with practical implementation.<o:p></o:p> <br />    <p style="text-align: justify;">“Seeing remote hospitals treat patients on time for the first time shows what’s possible when purpose and execution come together,” said Martín Cottone, General Manager &amp; Human Pharma Head APUB&nbsp;(Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay &amp; Bolivia).<o:p></o:p> <br />    <h2 style="text-align: justify;"><span lang="EN-US">Creating a Sustainable System Rather Than a Standalone Program<o:p></o:p></span></h2>    <p style="text-align: justify;">Salta Stroke 360° is not based on one technology, one training program, or one medical intervention. Its strength lies in connecting multiple elements of stroke care so that they support one another.<o:p></o:p> <br />    <p style="text-align: justify;">Clinical training is being combined with improved infrastructure, community education, partnerships, and public policy. Together, these components are helping create a more resilient stroke-care system.<o:p></o:p> <br />    <p style="text-align: justify;">Reliable diagnostic equipment is a critical part of that effort. Older CT scanners—the diagnostic tools that allow clinicians to see what is happening inside the brain—are being replaced with dependable modern equipment. Partnerships are also helping make advanced technologies available in locations where they were previously difficult to access.<o:p></o:p> <br />    <p style="text-align: justify;">Public-sector involvement has provided another foundation for long-term progress.<o:p></o:p> <br />    <p style="text-align: justify;">In early 2024, Provincial Law No. 8420 formally established a Stroke Network in Salta, creating a framework to support prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. The province also introduced a Tele-Stroke Network, allowing hospitals without neurologists on site to access specialist expertise remotely.<o:p></o:p> <br />    <p style="text-align: justify;">This represents an important shift in the initiative's evolution. What began as a collaborative project is increasingly becoming part of the public healthcare infrastructure. By embedding stroke services within the health system itself, Salta Stroke 360° is positioned not merely as a temporary intervention, but as a model capable of continuing, expanding, and reaching more patients across the province.<o:p></o:p> <br />

   <title>Kerala 2024 Flood Relief: Direct Relief and Amrita Institute Aid Efforts</title>

      <div style="text-align: justify;">On the night of July 30, 2024, rural areas in Kerala, a western Indian state, experienced unprecedented flooding. While these communities frequently face intense storms, the resulting landslides caused widespread destruction, severely impacting villages and disrupting essential healthcare services. <br />   <br />  Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Center, a long-term partner of Direct Relief, operates a hospital close to the affected regions. Within a week, Amrita’s Disaster Management Medical Unit had provided free care to over 1,200 landslide survivors, deployed a mobile medical unit to reach remote areas, and received additional medical supplies from Direct Relief. These shipments included critical items such as medications, gloves, masks, and protective face shields, all vital for ongoing relief efforts. <br />   <br />  Direct Relief continues to support partner organizations long after a disaster strikes, responding to ongoing needs even after media attention subsides. In the months following the Kerala landslides, the organization fulfilled extensive requests from Amrita, delivering $7.2 million worth of medical aid across 14 shipments. <br />   <br />  Later in the year, as communities affected by the landslides still required assistance, Direct Relief partnered with FedEx to maintain a steady flow of supplies. The largest post-landslide shipment delivered through this collaboration provided essential medicines and medical equipment to treat both acute and chronic conditions. <br />   <br />  This joint effort highlights the value of strong partnerships during crises.
