Mark, a proud Navy submarine veteran and longtime resident of Lake County, has spent his life serving others—both during his military career and within his community. After working as a medical technologist, he stayed involved in local veteran activities, lends a hand to Fat Cat Rescue, and participates as a member of the American Legion in Fox Lake. Helping others has always come naturally to him.

For many years, Mark took great pride in caring for his home. A committed “do-it-yourself” type, he tackled most repairs on his own. But a medical condition that now prevents him from lifting more than 15 pounds changed that. For someone who has always valued independence, realizing he could no longer keep up with his home was incredibly difficult.

With encouragement from his girlfriend, who works for a nearby village, Mark turned to Lake-McHenry Habitat for Humanity for assistance. He bought his home in 1990 after renting it for several years, but over time the siding, gutters, and windows had deteriorated. Beyond affecting the look of the house, these issues also increased his utility costs. “I don’t want to worry about this anymore,” Mark shared. “I want to come home and feel proud—like, ‘That’s my house.’”

Habitat Lake-McHenry stepped in, installing new siding, gutters, and windows. The upgrades have brought comfort, reduced financial stress, and ensured his home will stay safe and energy-efficient well into the future.

To Mark, his house is much more than a structure—it's a place full of memories and an important part of the legacy he hopes to pass down to his children and grandchildren. Thanks to Habitat’s support, that legacy is now protected.

Roy, a U.S. Army veteran, dedicated 12 years of service to his country with strength and perseverance. During Operation Desert Storm, he worked as a mechanic, maintaining essential military vehicles under the most demanding conditions to ensure the safety and mobility of his fellow soldiers. His time in the military instilled in him a deep sense of discipline, precision, and steadfast commitment. After completing his service, Roy transitioned into civilian life, applying his technical and security expertise to continue supporting military personnel. He eventually made his home in North Chicago, Illinois, where he spent 28 years creating a lifetime of memories with his family in a house filled with warmth and love.

Over time, however, Roy’s home began to deteriorate. The kitchen floor started to give way, persistent leaks became a source of stress, and the bathroom no longer met his physical needs. Most concerning, safely entering and exiting his home became increasingly difficult. The place that had once been a haven now posed daily challenges, threatening his well-being and independence.

That’s when Lake-McHenry Habitat for Humanity stepped in—offering more than just repairs, but a renewed sense of comfort and peace of mind.

After years of dedicated service to his country, Roy can now enjoy his home of nearly three decades with confidence and peace.
