      <p style="text-align:justify;text-justify:inter-ideograph">The American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) has announced the recipients of its 2026 HBCU Faculty Fellowship and Grant Program, an initiative designed to support outstanding research by faculty in the humanities and interpretive social sciences at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). This year, eight fellows will each receive up to $50,000 to advance sustained research projects, while twelve additional recipients will be awarded up to $10,000 to support project development and smaller-scale studies.<o:p></o:p> <br />    <p style="text-align:justify;text-justify:inter-ideograph">According to Nike Nivar Ortiz, ACLS Program Officer for U.S. Programs, this year’s 20 awards span faculty from 18 HBCUs, representing a diverse mix of institution types, disciplines, and research approaches. She emphasized that the range of awardees highlights the richness of scholarship across HBCUs and reaffirmed ACLS’s commitment to supporting these institutions, which hold a vital place in the landscape of American higher education and history.<o:p></o:p> <br />    <p style="text-align:justify;text-justify:inter-ideograph">The funded projects explore a wide array of topics, including institutional and community histories tied to HBCUs, significant national concerns, influential literary figures, and complex global movements. Examples include research on African American Union soldiers who established Lincoln University of Missouri, a study of women’s political engagement in the Democratic Republic of Congo between 1930 and 1965, an analysis of the ethical and legal foundations for Black reparations, and an examination of underrepresented voices in African diasporic opera. These projects span multiple disciplines such as African American studies, linguistics, philosophy, religious studies, and performance studies.<o:p></o:p> <br />    <p style="text-align:justify;text-justify:inter-ideograph">Readers can find more details about the 2026 fellows, grantees, and their respective projects through ACLS resources.<o:p></o:p> <br />    <p style="text-align:justify;text-justify:inter-ideograph">Now in its third year, the program was created in collaboration with HBCU faculty and administrators to better address the distinct teaching and service responsibilities they carry. In addition to research funding, recipients benefit from networking and professional development opportunities, along with a supplementary $2,500 grant awarded to their home institutions to enhance humanities programs or infrastructure.<o:p></o:p> <br />    <p style="text-align:justify;text-justify:inter-ideograph">The ACLS HBCU Faculty Fellowship and Grant Program is primarily supported by the organization’s endowment, which has been strengthened by contributions from funders, member institutions, and individual donors since ACLS was established in 1919.<o:p></o:p> <br />    <p style="text-align:justify;text-justify:inter-ideograph">Founded over a century ago, ACLS is a nonprofit federation comprising 81 scholarly organizations. As a leading voice for humanities and social science scholarship in the United States, it promotes the idea that knowledge should serve the public good. Through its support of member organizations, ACLS works to broaden the scope, accessibility, and diversity of scholarly knowledge while collaborating with institutions and individuals to strengthen the systems that sustain research and learning.<o:p></o:p> <br />

      <div style="text-align: justify;"><strong>How Mobility, Work, Safety, and the Energy Economy Shape Our Lives</strong> <br />  The way we move, work, stay safe, and power our world has a profound impact on our everyday experiences. No matter where people live, these four elements influence how we interact at home, in the workplace, and within our communities. <br />   <br />  Although people around the globe recognize the challenges these areas present, there’s a shared optimism about their potential to create a brighter future. This hopeful outlook opens the door for businesses and governments to join forces, using scientific research and technological breakthroughs to solve some of the world’s most urgent problems. <br />   <br />  "As a leader in materials science, technology, and manufacturing, 3M is committed to paving the way forward with game-changing solutions," said Dr. Jayshree Seth, 3M’s corporate scientist and chief science advocate. "Through science-driven innovation, we aim to create scalable, effective solutions that support global progress and contribute to a better tomorrow." <br />   <br />  In collaboration with Morning Consult, 3M conducted research exploring public sentiment and attitudes toward mobility, work, safety, and energy to better understand global trends and concerns. <br />  &nbsp; <br />  <strong>Mobility: Embracing Innovation, But Valuing Independence</strong> <br />  While personal vehicles remain the preferred mode of transportation, people are increasingly open to new automotive technologies—especially as they consider the future. Currently, only 21% of survey respondents own electric or hybrid vehicles, but 53% said they would choose one if affordability weren’t a barrier. <br />   <br />  Cost remains the top deterrent, cited by 80% of respondents. Other concerns include battery range (79%), availability of charging infrastructure (78%), and safety issues such as fire risk and environmental concerns surrounding lithium battery production. <br />   <br />  In response, continuous advancements are helping to overcome these challenges. 3M is contributing through innovations in battery technology, adhesives, and display systems to make electric vehicles lighter, safer, and more efficient. For instance, 3M Glass Bubbles help reduce the weight of composite materials, boosting vehicle performance. Their specialized adhesives assist manufacturers in more easily disassembling EV battery packs—supporting repairability and recycling efforts. Additionally, 3M’s optical films enhance in-vehicle displays and connectivity, contributing to safer and more immersive driving experiences. <br />  &nbsp; <br />  <strong>Manufacturing: Valued Yet Misunderstood</strong> <br />  The manufacturing sector enjoys strong public respect, with 75% recognizing its positive economic impact and 41% linking it to skilled labor. A large majority (78%) respect manufacturing workers and support expanding training opportunities to prepare individuals for these roles. <br />   <br />  While 65% believe technological advancements will create more manufacturing jobs, 70% still express concern that automation could displace workers. Nevertheless, 71% agree that more manufacturing jobs are needed, and 61% are optimistic about job growth in this sector over the next five years. <br />   <br />  Technical skills are also seen as vital—74% of respondents believe today’s manufacturing jobs require tech-savvy workers. When advising young people on careers, 80% recommend skilled trades, 78% endorse STEM roles, 75% suggest green jobs, and 68% support manufacturing careers. <br />   <br />  To meet the demand for skilled workers, 3M launched the Manufacturing and Academic Partnerships (MAP) program, which provides practical training in engineering, computer science, and manufacturing. The company also continues to invest in its long-standing collaboration with SkillsUSA to help close the skills gap and empower young people to pursue careers in trades. Additionally, 3M produced a docuseries called <em>Skilled</em>, which highlights real-life stories of professionals in trades such as welding, fall protection, and film production—spotlighting opportunities in this vital industry. <br />  &nbsp; <br />  <strong>Safety: A Priority in a Rapidly Evolving Workplace</strong> <br />  As new technologies transform workplaces, safety concerns are also evolving. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has identified automation and human-robot interaction as key workplace safety trends for 2025. <br />   <br />  People now view safety more broadly—60% associate it with work, 57% with recreational activities and home life, and 62% with daily routines like commuting or shopping. <br />   <br />  Most respondents (82%) believe employers are responsible for workplace safety, and 72% feel their employers provide appropriate protective equipment. However, only 67% feel adequately trained for workplace hazards. <br />   <br />  3M’s commitment to safety innovation is longstanding. During the COVID-19 pandemic, its N95 respirators became essential tools in combating airborne threats. The company also offers virtual reality safety training for high-risk jobs and develops high-visibility materials to enhance road safety for both pedestrians and workers. <br />  &nbsp; <br />  <strong>Energy Economy: A Global Priority with Strong Public Support</strong> <br />  As energy security becomes increasingly important, people are looking toward cleaner, more sustainable options. Around 70% anticipate job growth in the energy sector over the next ten years, and 75% support government investment in green energy employment. <br />   <br />  Support for energy strategies is high, with 79% backing renewable energy initiatives, 78% supporting clean transportation, 77% promoting energy efficiency, and 62% advocating for nuclear energy. <br />   <br />  3M is contributing to a sustainable future by investing in hydrogen energy technologies. Their 3M&nbsp;Nanostructured Supported Iridium Catalyst Powder, for instance, enables efficient hydrogen production while reducing carbon emissions. <br />   <br />  Additionally, building a resilient and intelligent power grid is essential for meeting future demands. 3M’s Sensored Cable Accessories offer real-time data on grid health, helping utility providers detect issues, reduce downtime, and improve system reliability. These innovations support the transition toward a smarter, more secure energy infrastructure. <br />  &nbsp; <br />  <strong>Looking Ahead with Optimism and Purpose</strong> <br />  In all four areas—mobility, work, safety, and energy—people acknowledge existing challenges but remain hopeful about what lies ahead. Science and technology are widely seen as the keys to progress, and 3M continues to lead the way in transforming this optimism into real-world impact.</div>
