Scott Thompson has experienced franchising from nearly every angle. Over the past 20 years, he has owned a franchise, held executive leadership positions with franchisors, and served as a CEO in private equity-backed organizations where rapid expansion, operational demands, and business performance intersect. Today, as the founder of Your Future Franchise, his focus has shifted from selling franchise opportunities to helping aspiring business owners identify concepts that genuinely align with their goals, lifestyle, and strengths.

In a recent interview, Thompson reflected on the lesson he wishes he had learned earlier in his career. Looking back to when he entered franchising at age 22, he remarked, "So if I had to start all over again. Back when I was 22 years old and started on a franchise, I 100% would find somebody who's done it before."

That belief now forms the foundation of his consulting approach. In his view, practical guidance from experienced professionals is one of the most valuable assets for anyone entering franchising.

Discussing what he would change if he were starting from scratch, Thompson explained, "I'd spend time on building on a real budget, and my good, better, best, and really try to analyze market penetration rates, what my addressable market is, how the customer behaves in the market, how to acquire those customers efficiently, and then how to keep those customers as long as possible."

According to Thompson, many first-time franchise owners devote enormous energy to attracting customers while overlooking the systems required to retain them. He believes this imbalance often becomes the silent cause of long-term business struggles.

Reflecting on his own early experience, he admitted, "I spent so much time on selling, selling, or bringing on. I missed that my operations also weren't sound and the processes weren't sound, so the consistency wasn't sound at times." He noted that weak operational processes eventually undermine growth because customers may initially engage with the business but fail to return.

Customer retention, he says, is one of the clearest indicators of a franchise's long-term health. Drawing from operational data, Thompson shared, "If a customer wasn't coming in more than 1.7 times per week, even though they might be booked for three times a week, then in three months, they probably wouldn't resign with us." By contrast, "if a customer was coming on an average 2.2 to 2.5 times per week, there was a 95% likelihood they'd resign after three months because they saw some tangible results."

These operational insights now play a major role in how Thompson evaluates prospective franchise owners.

He believes successful franchising is less about creating something entirely new and more about consistently executing an established business model. As he explains, "The ideal franchisee profile is not necessarily the true entrepreneur who wants to build everything and have the vision for everything. The constant tinkerer, the person who likes to tinker all the time, is probably not going to be great at a franchise system."

Instead, he believes the strongest candidates are those who embrace structured entrepreneurship. "We are looking for B-level entrepreneurs that are looking to build a business, be in control of the decision-making of the business, but have the support and structure of a brand."

Execution, he emphasizes, is often the deciding factor. "The best franchisees are also action-oriented; they don't overthink things."

Thompson also cautions against one of the most common expansion mistakes—purchasing more territory than can realistically be developed. "Everyone wants more," he explained, "but when you buy too much territory, and you don't invest in that territory, whether it's salespeople, trucks on the road, you name it, you're not going to acquire the customers fast enough."

Without adequate investment, he says, businesses frequently struggle to generate the customer base needed to support their expansion plans.

Similarly, he advises caution when committing to multiple franchise locations too early. "I wouldn't buy 10 or more, unless you have the capital to accelerate quickly, because the development schedule and the timelines of the brand may be more aggressive than the capital you have, and therefore you kind of hit a wall."

These perspectives are rooted in firsthand experience. Having built, managed, and advised franchise businesses throughout his career, Thompson has repeatedly seen entrepreneurs encounter challenges that could have been avoided with better planning and realistic expectations.

He has also observed a shift in why many professionals are pursuing franchise ownership. Increasingly, he says, the motivation extends beyond financial success to gaining greater personal control over work and life.

Describing the mindset of many corporate employees, Thompson said, "People feel that they're given so much to corporate and there's no loyalty left on the corporate side; they want to take control again and have flexibility to be around their families."

His own career reflects that transition. Years spent traveling extensively for work often meant sacrificing valuable family time. Today, he appreciates being present for moments such as his son's football offseason activities—experiences that once would have been missed. At the same time, he cautions against viewing business ownership as an easy alternative to corporate life. Running a franchise comes with its own demands, and prospective owners need a realistic understanding of the responsibilities involved and whether those responsibilities align with their skills and expectations.

That philosophy guides his work with clients.

Rather than encouraging people to pursue the first available opportunity, Thompson spends time understanding their personal objectives, financial position, and preferred management style. His goal is to identify franchise opportunities that offer a genuine long-term fit rather than simply closing a transaction.

In many cases, he believes the best advice is to recommend walking away. A poor franchise match, he argues, costs far more than money—it can diminish confidence and derail long-term aspirations. Many unsuccessful outcomes, in his experience, stem from misunderstanding what franchise ownership truly requires, and he sees his role as helping candidates avoid those costly mistakes before they commit.

Thompson describes his advisory work as giving future franchise owners access to lessons that took him years to learn. Drawing on experience as a franchise owner, franchisor executive, and private equity leader, he provides practical insight that helps candidates make informed decisions. Yet beyond systems, strategy, and business models, what motivates him most is helping people discover opportunities that genuinely fit their lives. For Thompson, that is the true mission behind Your Future Franchise.

Taco John’s, a prominent Mexican quick-service restaurant chain, has strengthened its leadership team with the appointment of Ian Poole as Vice President of Development. A seasoned professional in business development and franchising, Poole brings close to two decades of experience driving expansion for major restaurant and franchise brands.

A Strategic Move to Accelerate Growth
Before joining Taco John’s, Poole served as Vice President of Development at Subway, where he led North American development efforts. In that role, he oversaw franchise sales, real estate, construction and design, equipment, operations, and leasing for a network of more than 22,000 locations. He has also contributed to the growth of brands such as Dunkin’ and Planet Fitness. At Taco John’s, Poole will focus on supporting brand expansion while improving franchisee success through enhancements in onboarding, real estate strategy, and construction processes.

“Taco John’s has established a strong foundation with a clear focus on supporting franchisees, and I’m excited to help drive the brand’s next phase of growth,” said Ian Poole, VP of Development.

“My priority is to expand the brand thoughtfully and sustainably while providing streamlined, end-to-end support for every franchise owner. We’re building a system that enables both new and existing franchisees to grow with confidence, and I look forward to the opportunities ahead.”

Poole’s background also includes hands-on experience as a franchisee with Burger King, Popeyes, and Arby’s under Ambrosia QSR. His collaborative leadership style is centered on strengthening relationships across the franchise network.

“Heather Neary, President and CEO of Taco John’s, noted that Poole’s appointment marks an important step in advancing the company’s franchise development efforts. His dual perspective as both an executive and a franchise owner provides valuable insight into refining systems that set franchisees up for long-term success. As the brand builds on recent operational investments, his expertise is expected to play a key role in sustaining momentum.”

Renewed Focus on Franchisee Support
Following a year of foundational progress, Taco John’s entered 2026 positioned for strategic, data-driven growth. Investments in the brand’s Path to Ownership initiative are giving franchisees access to expanded resources, succession planning, and improved communication across the system.

The company is also prioritizing non-traditional formats as a key growth avenue, planning pilot locations with experienced operators to evaluate performance and scale responsibly. Future initiatives include menu optimization for smaller spaces, simplified labor models, performance standards for high-traffic environments, and targeted marketing strategies tailored to these formats. This approach allows entry into high-demand locations with lower capital requirements while complementing traditional restaurant development.

Taco John’s continues to invest in its development infrastructure and franchise support systems, presenting an attractive opportunity for entrepreneurs seeking to expand their portfolios with an established concept.

With more than 325 restaurants across 21 states, the brand sees strong growth opportunities in the Upper Midwest and Rocky Mountain regions. Both new and multi-unit operators are being offered customized support to scale efficiently and sustainably.

According to the company’s Franchise Disclosure Document, the top 25% of freestanding Taco John’s restaurants with drive-thru report an average unit volume (AUV) of $1,889,495.

Click here to know more about Taco John's franchise opportunities.
