   <title>Sustainable &amp; Silica-Free Countertop Surfaces</title>

      <div style="text-align: justify;">The global countertop market is undergoing another major transformation. What began primarily as a conversation about appearance and design gradually expanded to include considerations such as strength, longevity and overall performance. In more recent years, the availability of unbranded materials and lower-cost fabrication shifted attention increasingly toward price. <br />   <br />  Today, however, the priorities are changing again. Sustainability, manufacturing transparency, and the health and safety of workers are becoming increasingly important factors in the selection and specification of countertop surfaces. <br />   <br />  A significant development came in May 2026, when the UK’s Health &amp; Safety Executive (HSE) introduced new guidance addressing respirable crystalline silica (RCS), together with a nationwide inspection programme focused on engineered stone fabricators.</div>    <h2 style="text-align: justify;"> <br />  Crystalline Silica-Free Surfaces: A New Benchmark</h2>    <div style="text-align: justify;">The latest HSE guidance makes it clear that dry cutting of engineered stone is not considered an acceptable working practice. Water suppression is identified as a key measure businesses should use to fulfil their existing legal responsibilities for controlling exposure to RCS. <br />   <br />  The HSE also recommends that employers choose materials with the lowest practical crystalline silica content, while implementing additional measures such as effective mist control and ongoing health surveillance. <br />   <br />  Against this changing regulatory and industry landscape, Caesarstone introduced Caesarstone ICON&nbsp;in 2025. The collection uses an advanced, patent-pending material formulation that is crystalline silica-free, while being designed to deliver the performance expected from contemporary surface materials. It brings together advanced material technology, high-end aesthetics and practical performance within a surface portfolio designed to respond to changing industry requirements. <br />   <br />  For kitchen designers and retailers, the collection offers an opportunity to respond proactively to evolving expectations while continuing to provide customers with the durability, appearance and performance they demand. <br />   <br />  The Caesarstone ICON&nbsp;collection currently includes 59 designs across global markets, with the range continuing to expand each quarter.</div>    <h2 style="text-align: justify;">The Questions Behind the Surface</h2>    <div style="text-align: justify;">As safety and sustainability become more prominent in the surface industry, the purchasing decision is no longer based solely on appearance, price or performance. <br />   <br />  Retailers, designers, developers and homeowners are increasingly interested in the story behind the material. They want to understand what a surface contains, where its materials come from, how it is manufactured and whether its production practices are consistent with emerging industry expectations. <br />   <br />  In other words, what is the surface made from, and how was it produced<strong>?</strong> These questions are becoming just as relevant as colour, finish and performance. <br />   <br />  This shift is also creating greater demand for credible technical information from manufacturers. Retailers and designers specifying surface materials should increasingly expect brands to provide clear documentation demonstrating safety, compliance and performance. <br />   <br />  Resources such as <a class="link" href="https://mos.caesarstone.co.uk/professional-library/?types=safety-data-sheet">Safety Data Sheets</a>, <a class="link" href="https://mos.caesarstone.co.uk/professional-library/?types=technical-data-sheet">Technical Data Sheets</a>  and <a class="link" href="https://www.caesarstone.co.uk/sustainability/our-standards-and-certifications/">independent third-party certifications</a>  can provide valuable evidence of product characteristics, regulatory compliance, performance and responsible manufacturing practices.</div>    <h2 style="text-align: justify;"> <br />  Sustainability Moves to the Forefront</h2>    <div style="text-align: justify;">Safety is only one part of the wider transformation taking place in the countertop sector. Environmental responsibility is also playing a growing role in how surfaces are evaluated and specified. <br />   <br />  Caesarstone ICON&nbsp;incorporates approximately 85% recycled material, including quality post-industrial glass. Design and performance remain important, but they are increasingly being considered alongside material transparency, worker safety, recycled content and independently verified environmental credentials. <br />   <br />  The countertop of the future is therefore likely to be judged not only by how it looks and performs, but also by what it contains, how it is made and the impact its production has on people and the environment.</div>

("O-I Glass" or "O-I") has successfully developed and tested an innovative, cost-effective mobile glass processing machine, known as "MOGRA" (Mobile Glass Recycling Asset). This portable system is designed for easy transportation and deployment, allowing for the cleaning and crushing of recycled glass to be used as raw material. MOGRA offers a practical solution for recycling glass into furnace-ready material in areas lacking infrastructure. <br />  &nbsp; <br />  According to Randy Burns, Chief Sustainability and Corporate Affairs Officer for O-I, "MOGRA builds on our long tradition of enhancing the sustainability of glass packaging by enabling O-I to implement comprehensive, closed-loop recycling programs with our clients and communities. This system generates furnace-ready cullet, enhancing the recycled content in our glass packaging." MOGRA's versatile and transformative capabilities allow O-I to effectively expand its recycling and sustainability initiatives using a single asset. <br />  &nbsp; <br />  The MOGRA system is designed to fit on a truck trailer, allowing it to be transported to various locations, including O-I facilities and other sites across the U.S. Once deployed, it can be operational within a day, efficiently processing glass packaging from brewers, distillers, bottlers, and communities into localized raw material for glass production. The system's mobility enhances the feasibility of glass recycling by minimizing logistical challenges, transportation costs, and associated emissions. <br />  &nbsp; <br />  MOGRA is engineered to crush glass to specific sizes while removing metallic contaminants such as caps, closures, and capsules, thereby improving the quality of recycled glass. The system can process up to 6,000 metric tons of glass packaging annually. <br />  &nbsp; <br />  Burns further stated, "As the importance of recycled content grows in helping our customers meet their sustainability targets, O-I's innovative solutions will increase the cullet content in our glass packaging, advancing our overall sustainability efforts. Glass is 100 percent and infinitely recyclable, and by addressing gaps in the recycling process, we are maximizing its potential in the circular economy." <br />  &nbsp; <br />  O-I aims to increase the recycled content in its packaging to a global average of 50 percent. Glass production uses four primary ingredients: limestone, soda ash, silica sand, and cullet (recycled glass). By increasing the amount of cullet in production, O-I conserves natural resources and reduces the energy required for manufacturing. Cullet melts at lower temperatures, and incorporating 10 percent more recycled glass reduces overall emissions by five percent. Each ton of cullet used saves 1.6 tons of natural resources. <br />  &nbsp; <br />  O-I's vision is to become the most sustainable and preferred supplier of brand-building packaging by revolutionizing glass manufacturing and recycling through groundbreaking innovations. <br />  &nbsp; <br />  “MOGRA has the potential to build on the flexibility of the flexible and modular capabilities of our&nbsp;MAGMA&nbsp;production technology and can transform the footprint of glass production as it is done today,” said Burns.
