KOIN’s original commitment to fully sponsor coverage of high school sports received such a strong response that the organization has now broadened the initiative to include all extracurricular programs available through the uReport platform.

This expansion gives schools and local communities the opportunity to showcase and share a wide range of student activities, including everything from musical performances and theatre productions to academic and technology-focused clubs. The program is available to every high school within the Portland, Oregon DMA.

The current list of activities supported through uReport includes:

Academic Challenge/Quiz Bowl, Art Club, Broadcast and Media Production, Chess Team, Coding and Computer Science Teams, Concert and Jazz Bands, CyberPatriot and Cybersecurity Teams, DECA, Drama and Theatre, Improv Groups, Entrepreneurship and Pitch Teams, Environmental Clubs, FBLA, Future Farmers of America, FIRST and VEX Robotics, HOSA, Marching Band, Math Teams, Mock Trial, Model United Nations, Orchestra, Photography Club, Science Olympiad, Show Choir and Competitive Choir, SkillsUSA, Speech and Debate, Technology Student Association, and Yearbook and Journalism programs.

Schools with additional or specialized student organizations may also request to have them added to the platform.

“There are more than 224,000 students participating in high school athletics across Oregon and Washington,” said Tom Keeler, Vice President and General Manager of KOIN. “We believe an equally large number of students are engaged in clubs and extracurricular activities, and they deserve the same recognition and visibility. We are excited for students and families to experience this expanded coverage.”

Keeler also emphasized the growing importance of artificial intelligence in education and media. “Within the next five years, high schools nationwide are expected to introduce coursework centered on AI and its practical applications, including journalism and reporting. Schools will need effective ways to integrate these tools, and uReport provides an outstanding opportunity for them to take a leadership role in that process.”

uReport has earned approval from the International Society for Technology in Education EdTech Index and is featured in the ISTE Learning Technology Directory, a trusted resource educators use to evaluate high-quality digital learning solutions.

“We encourage schools to involve as many students as possible,” Keeler added. “This collaboration creates meaningful, hands-on learning opportunities. Students can build experience in technology, journalism, AI integration, media production, and other essential skills that will benefit them in the future.”

Click here if you are part of a school and you would like to be part of this partnership.

Arrow McLaren IndyCar driver Pato O’Ward may not have secured the winner’s trophy at this year’s Indianapolis 500, but he’s certainly a winner in the eyes of a group of local middle schoolers.

For Monarca Academy’s students, O’Ward stands as both a role model and a mentor. He’s been a fixture at the school for years, delivering messages of hope, positivity, and opportunity in the lead-up to the big race. This year, he teamed up with Arrow Electronics and the nonprofit N50 Project to unveil a new digital lab, opening up additional learning possibilities for the academy’s 240 students.

The lab is equipped with 20 workstations, interactive SMART boards, an AI tool, a 3D printer, a FIRST Robotics kit — allowing for the design and programming of competition-caliber robots — and a strong internet connection.

“The new STEM lab helps our students discover their passions, foster creativity, and prepare for future innovations. It’s a place where imagination meets opportunity — and that kind of access can make a real difference in their lives,” said Francisco Valdiosera, Monarca Academy’s executive director.

This lab forms a key piece of N50’s EdTech Equity Initiative, which aims to bring technology and connectivity to under-resourced communities. Arrow, alongside companies such as Intel, ApplianSys, and SMART Technologies, is helping N50 make this a reality through low-cost, sustainable, and scalable innovations.

“The lab will provide crucial education and skills training, preparing Monarca students for the workforce of the 21st-century. Access to interactive content — whether it’s coding, robotics, or responsible use of AI — can enable them to pursue future career paths that might otherwise remain closed to them without these digital skills,” said Ivey Bostrom, corporate marketing partnerships manager for Arrow.

The Monarca lab marks the second collaboration between Arrow and N50; the first was opened in a primary school in Guadalajara, Mexico, where O’Ward also played a key role. Arrow plans to collaborate with N50 to launch a total of three labs this year.
