UK Workers Suffer Mainly From Mental Health Issues

06/13/2016

UK leads in maximum sick leaves used by the workers on an annual basis.

Dailycsr.com – 13 June 2016 – The Company of Cloudbooking deals with software space management of UK’s leading companies, whereby the Chief Executive Officer of Cloudbooking, Gerry Brennan draws our attention by pointing out that the sick days in the United Kingdom’s workforce is maximum in comparison to any “other European country” and double to the U.S.

The statistics revealed by the PricewaterhouseCoopers consultancy show that the British workers avail “9.1 sick days” off annually on an average basis, whereas the remaining European countries has an average of “7.3” annual sick days, while the U.S. sports the lowest average of “4.9 days” for the same.

However, the reason behind the “long-term absence” of the workers from their work place due to medical leave seems to exhibit a single dominant problem: “mental health issues”. In Brennan’s words:
“It’s a real economic concern, illustrated by health body BUPA, which reports that over £29 billion pounds is lost annually to the UK economy, with mental health cited again as the major issue”.
“The reports we have read in recent years on mental health fail to take into consideration the workplace’s bearing on many people’s mental status. After all, when you are in a job that you don’t enjoy and feel unsupported and unhappy, the response is to stay away as much as possible”.

In the year of 2014, the University of Warwick came out with a report that demonstrated that if the employees are happy then their workout output is better and they prove to be at least twelve percent more “productive”. He said:
“Treat employees well, support them and they will naturally perform better, with less time off sick”.

On a concluding note, Brennan adds that employees need to be shown how to balance their work besides living a healthy life, he stated:
“Allowing a work/life balance for workers means a workforce that is motivated, supportive and genuinely behind what their organisation is trying to achieve.
“Britain’s level of sick absences is inexcusable - it’s time to create a supportive working environment for employees, which in turn will create a ‘win win’ for the UK economy”.
